SCHOOL PATROL: Soddy-Daisy High, Howard, CSAS will have new principals

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)- A surprise post-graduation wave of retirements and requests for lesser duties has resulted in a major shake-up of Hamilton County high school principals.

Superintendent Rick Smith told Eyewitness News that after last week's graduation programs, three high school principals requested retirement or reassignments.  CSAS principal Barbara Jordan announced her retirement, while Howard High principal Paul Smith will become public safety director for the City of Chattanooga.  Soddy-Daisy High principal John Maynard requested a reassignment to an assistant principal post.  A replacement for Smith has yet to be named.  Danny Gilbert will move from Signal Mountain Middle/High to become principal at Soddy-Daisy High.  Jim Boles, longtime assistant principal at CSAS, will move up to the principal's post.

Superintendent Rick Smith is pleased to announce that the following individuals have accepted administrative positions for the 2013-14 school year.  These administrators will begin their assignments in their new schools and / or positions on July 1, 2013.




  • Wendy Jung, current principal at Tyner Middle Academy, has accepted a two-year Research and Professional Development Fellowship with the Teachers Development Group (TDG).  Ms. Jung has been with HCDE since 1990, and will be retained as a Principal on Special Assignment while with TDG.


  • Aimee Randolph, current principal at Thrasher Elementary, has accepted the Lead Director of Instruction position, created through a restructuring of the Education and Leadership division.  Ms. Randolph has been with HCDE since 1977.


  • Becky Coleman, current principal at Calvin Donaldson Elementary, has accepted the K-12 Literacy Director position.  Ms. Coleman has been with HCDE since 2000.



John Maynard, who has been principal of Soddy-Daisy High School, will become assistant principal of Center for Creative Arts, replacing the retiring Tom Eiselstein. 

  • Paul Smith, current principal at The Howard School, is leaving to take a position with the City of Chattanooga. The position of Howard principal will be advertised during the next few days.


  • Jim Boles, current assistant principal at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences (upper school), will become principal there.  Mr. Boles has been with HCDE since 1994 and will replace Barbara Jordan, who is retiring.




  • Regina Brock, current principal at Lookout Valley Elementary, will become principal at Thrasher Elementary.  Ms. Brock has been with HCDE since 1987.


  • Cherrye Robertson, current assistant principal at Calvin Donaldson Elementary, will become principal there.  Ms. Robertson has been with HCDE since 2003.


  • Alisan Taylor, current assistant principal at Nolan Elementary, will become principal at Lookout Valley Elementary.  Ms. Taylor has been with HCDE since 1984.


  • Gail Huffstutler, current assistant principal at Bess T. Shepherd Elementary, will become principal at East Ridge Elementary.  Ms. Huffstutler has been with HCDE since 1999 and is replacing Carol Langston, who is retiring. 


  • Allison DeYoung, current assistant principal at Apison Elementary, will become principal at Ganns-Middle Valley Elementary.  Ms. DeYoung has been with HCDE since 2005 and is replacing Sandra Jerardi, who is retiring.


  • Julie Fine, current assistant principal at Wallace A. Smith Elementary, will become principal at Hixson Elementary.  Ms. Fine has been with HCDE since 1981 and is replacing Danna Thorne, who is moving out of state.
