North Georgia agencies gathered Thursday to pay tribute to emergency workers who have lost their lives.

About two dozen members of fire, rescue, police, and medical teams gathered on the helicopter pad of Hamilton Medical Center to light candles in honor of their fallen comrades.

Friday was also a chance to show appreciation for those still serving, who say a thank you goes a long way.

"We understand that when we get involved you're at your worst moment, and that is not always recognized as a time to say thank you. So the times that we do have those opportunities, the people on the road that do this job really do appreciate it," says Captain Lee Duman.

Friday's event was held as part of National EMS week.
