SEBASTIAN, FL (WESH) -- An online petition about the girl's arrest is gaining attention on and across the country. It's already amassed more than 80,000 signatures.

High school senior Kaitlyn Hunt,18, has been expelled. She's facing jail time and the label of a sex offender because of her sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girlfriend.

"I remember when I was in high school, seniors date freshmen, seniors date sophomores. It shouldn't be this big an issue," parent Kristy Tankersly said.

The two girls were classmates at Sebastian River High school. Shortly, after Hunt turned 18, the parent's of Kaitlyn's girlfriend filed a criminal complaint about the relationship.

Detectives said Hunt confessed to sexual acts when her girlfriend was only 14, so Hunt was arrested. Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said in the eyes of the law, her actions are illegal.

"Ms. Hunt turned 18 in August and these offenses occurred in December and January, so clearly Ms. Hunt was an adult in the eyes of the court and the victim was 14 years old," Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said.

The Sheriff said the case is no different from others he has investigated, including same sex allegations like this one.

Hunt faces two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior.
