Crime Stoppers: Police seek suspects for check fraud

Posted: Updated:

Here is a chance to put a stop to a counterfeit check writing scam, a crime ring that has struck in at least seven states.

On March the 18th, a man went shopping at the Gunbarrel Hobby Lobby.

He paid with a fake check, written for the amount purchased, plus some cash back.

Chattanooga is the third Tennessee city hit, along with cities in North and South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Florida, Michigan, and possibly others.

And, he is not acting alone.

"It's actually a group of people," Police Sgt. Daniel Jones said. "And we know it's a group of people because they're all using the same type of account numbers and check numbers and all that other stuff."

This a crime that goes undetected until hours, perhaps days, after the crook has left the store.

We are not talking about a theft in hundreds of dollars for this team.  They have made off with tens of thousands of dollars, so far.

We can stop them.

If you know anything, have seen anything, or recognize the guy in the surveillance photos, call Crime Stoppers: 698-3333.

Up to $1,000 reward cash is waiting and no one will ever ask for your identity.
