Whitwell wins opener in Class A state softball tournament
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Hailey Andregg had three hits and drove in two runs to lead Whitwell to a 4-3 win over Forrest in the opening round of the Class A state softball tournament at Spring Fling.
The Lady Tigers advance to face Gordonsville in a winner's bracket game Wednesday at 5pm ET. Gordonsville beat Trinity Christian 4-2 in its opening game.
Alyssa Coppinger, a UTC signee, finished with two hits, two walks and two runs scored. She led off the first and third innings with singles and scored on RBI-singles by Andregg in each frame.
Andregg scored Whitwell's other run on a groundout Kathleen Sledge.
Riley Long gave up a single run in the fourth and two in the seventh before closing out the complete-game win. She allowed eleven hits in the game, but stranded seven Forrest runners on base.
Errors doom East Hamilton in Class AA opener
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Kelsey Payne homered twice and drove in four runs, but East Hamilton could not overcome seven errors in a 12-6 loss to Chester County in the opening round of the Class AA state softball tournament at Spring Fling.
The Lady Canes will now face Greenbrier in an elimination game at 1pm ET Wednesday. Greenbrier lost to Gibbs 8-6 in its opener.
Madison McCaskill hit a three-run double to highlight a five-run fourth inning that put Chester County in front for good. Sammie Joe Ivy later added a three-run home run in a four-run sixth that was fueled by three East Hamilton errors.
Pressley Robinson also hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
Payne hit a three-run shot in the third that gave the Lady Canes a brief 3-1 lead. She also closed the scoring with a solo shot in the seventh.
Laughren home runs beat Meigs County
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Tiffany Laughren homered twice to lead Unicoi County to a 2-1 win over Meigs County in the opening round of the Class AA state softball tournament Tuesday evening at Spring Fling.
The Lady Tigers (23-12) will now face Lexington in an elimination game at 11am ET Wednesday. Lexington lost 4-3 to Goodpasture in 10 innings.
Meigs County pitcher Megan Boggess allowed just four hits in six strong innings, but made two costly mistakes to Laughren. Her solo home runs in the first and fourth innings provided all the offense Unicoi County would need and raised her state record for home runs in a single season to 22.
Angel Davis' RBI-single in the sixth plated the Lady Tigers' lone run. Meigs County stranded nine runners on base.
Pope John Paul II rallies past GPS
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Chelsie Fair's RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Pope John Paul II to a 5-4 win over Girls Preparatory School in the opening round of the Division II-AA state softball tournament Tuesday evening at Spring Fling.
The Bruisers now await the loser of Baylor's opening game against St. Benedict in an elimination game Wednesday afternoon. Baylor and St. Benedict will play at 1pm ET Wednesday morning.
Madi Stanley hit a two-run homer in the second to help GPS build a 3-1 lead, but PJPII rallied to take a 4-3 lead on Chelsie Smith's two-run homer in the fifth.
The Bruisers pulled back to even at 4-4 on Taylor Battle's RBI-single in the sixth, but Anna Buchanan reached on a one-out single in the seventh and advanced to third on a throwing error by GPS outfielder Bailey Davenport. She scored the game winner two batters later on Fair's two-out walk-off single.
