Silverdale baseball victorious in Spring Fling debut

Posted: Updated:

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Reid Clements tossed a complete game and Chance Brown had two hits and drove in one run to lift Silverdale Academy to a 5-1 win over Rockwood in the opening round of the Class A state baseball tournament Tuesday evening at Middle Tennessee Christian School.

The Seahawks, who are playing in their first-ever state tournament, advance to play Decatur County Riverside in a winner's bracket game at 2pm ET Wednesday afternoon. Riverside beat Summertown 4-2 in its tourney-opener.

Clements worked into trouble a few times, but the senior standout never flinched. He scattered five hits and issued three walks, but allowed just one unearned run while striking out 12.

Brown ended up with half of Silverdale's four hits, but the Seahawks managed to do plenty of damage by walking seven times and taking advantage of three Rockwood errors.

Spencer Mossburg scored on Joey Szollosi's fielder's choice groundout for Silverdale's first run, then Jordan Delashmitt delivered an RBI-double and later scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 advantage in the fourth.

Rockwood finally cracked the scoreboard on Clements in the bottom of the fourth when Hayden Freels scored on a double play, but Brown answered with an RBI single in the fifth to get the run back. Pinch-runner Cody Thomas later scored on a throwing error to cap the scoring.
