Baylor's Popp wins DII pentathlon title at Spring Fling

Posted: Updated:

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WRCB) -- The Chattanooga area's first 2013 Spring Fling state championship came in dramatic fashion Tuesday.

Baylor sophomore sensation Selena Popp claimed top honors in the Division II girls pentathlon at Middle Tennessee State University, but she did so by the narrowest of margins.

One point.

Popp won two of the five events to finish with an even 3,100 points, edging state runner-up Kate Jamison of Evangelical Christian School (3,099).

Popp's Baylor teammates Victoria Wicks (2,926) and Kate Kaufman (2,688) finished third and sixth, respectively.

Popp won the 100-meter hurdles and the high-jump and finished fourth in the shot and seventh in the long jump to build a slim lead through the first four events. She then ran a personal best 2:31:96 to finish fourth in the 800-meter finale to do just enough to hold off Jamison for the state title.

Jamison won the long jump and the 800 meters. Wicks finished runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and 800 meters.

Popp is the second straight local DII pentathlon winner, following a dominant performance by Girls Preparatory School's Tory Kemp in 2012.

Tyner's Vivian Smith was sixth in the Class A/AA pentathlon, and Soddy-Daisy's Emily Bryan was seventh in AAA.

Chattanooga Christian's Brandt McGregor is third in Class A/AA, Cleveland's Isaiah Beaty is seventh in Class AAA and Baylor's Joey Rogers is sixth in Division II at the midway point of the boys decathlon, which will conclude Tuesday.

Six area tennis teams, five local softball teams, three soccer programs and one baseball squad will also represent the Chattanooga area in the Spring Fling starting Tuesday and Wednesday.
