FOLKSTON, Ga. (WRCB) -- Gordon Lee claimed its fifth state championship of the 2012-13 school year Monday, but it wasn't on the diamond.
The Trojans' boys golf team held off rival Trion and host Commerce to capture the Class A Public School state title at Double Oaks Golf Club, but Gordon Lee baseball finished state runner-up after a 3-1 loss to Charlton County in eight innings.
L.J. Talley and Richard Dasher each delivered run-scoring singles as the host Indians scored two unearned runs in the first extra frame to snap a 1-all tie in the final game of the best-of-three Class A Public state final series.
The two teams split a doubleheader Saturday to force a winner-take-all third game Monday afternoon.
Gordon Lee played as the home team after winning a coin flip, but couldn't produce a winning or tying rally in its final at-bat in the bottom half of the eighth.
Tanner Sexton's RBI-single gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the third, but Scott Beasley's solo home run in the fifth pulled Charlton County back even.
Conrad Broom kept the Trojans close with a gutsy performance on the mound. The sophomore tossed a complete game in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader, then returned to the mound as the starter in game three. He gave up just he one run on four hits in six innings.
Jake Rogers suffered the loss after relieving Broom in the seventh and giving up the Indians' final two runs.
Jesse King picked up the state title-clinching win for Charlton County, scattering five hits in a complete-game effort.
The Trojans finish the season 30-4 overall. They were trying to join Gordon Lee softball, girls' basketball and wrestling (traditional and duals) in winning state championships this year.
