CARROLLTON, Ga. (WRCB) -- Dalton's fourth and final victory over a cross-county rival meant a little bit more than the previous three.
The top-ranked Catamounts scored early and often en route to a big early lead before cruising to a 5-0 win over Southeast Whitfield to win the Georgia Class AAAA state championship Friday night at the University of West Georgia.
Dalton's second state title came in its third trip to the state final. The Catamounts shared the 2003 title with Heritage-Rockdale and finished runner-up in 2004 after a loss to Woodward Academy.
Ramiro Huitanda scored twice as Dalton finished a perfect season with a 22-0 overall mark. Daniel Palacios, Eder More and Salvador Rodriguez each added a goal for the Catamounts, who entered the week ranked as the No. 2 prep team in the country according to MaxPreps.com.
Rodriguez put Dalton on the board just two minutes into the game, and Mora followed with a tally of a corner kick from Ryan Czyz seven minutes later for a 2-0 lead just ten minutes into the title match.
Palacios and Huitanda also scored before the intermission to give the Catamounts a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Huitanda's second goal midway through the second period capped a season of scoring in which Dalton out-scored opponents a whopping 134-8. The Cats blasted opponents by a 34-1 margin in their five playoff games.
Southeast Whitfield, who eliminated rival Northwest Whitfield with a 2-0 overtime win in Wednesday's semifinals, finishes the season at 13-5-1 overall. It's the second runner-up finish in the last five years for the Raiders. They lost to Lakeside-DeKalb in the state final in 2008.
