Silverdale baseball clinches first-ever Spring Fling berth

Silverdale tops Trousdale for first Spring Fling appearance
A season of firsts will continue for Silverdale baseball.

After clinching their first district and region championships over the past two weeks, the Seahawks added their first-ever trip to the state tournament with a 6-0 win over visiting Trousdale County in Class A sectional play.

Silverdale (26-2) will travel to Murfreesboro to play in the Class A bracket at Spring Fling next week.

Reid Clements went the distance on a two-hit shutout to run his record to a perfect 8-0 for the season. The Seahawks backed him with eight hits, including a fifth-inning lead-off homer from Joey Szollosi.

Matt Millard delivered an RBI-single and Josiah Green added a sacrifice fly as Silverdale struck early with three runs in the first.

Josh Bankston finished with two hits and drove in the game's final run on a groundout in the sixth. The Seahawks also scored two runs on Trousdale County errors.

Silverdale takes a nine-game winning streak into next week's state tournament and has allowed just one run over its last four games.

Friendship Christian routs Marion County in Class A sectional
Friendship Christian agreed to move its Class A sectional into its opponents backyard in hopes of beating the rain Friday, yet the Commanders proved to be ungracious hosts just the same.

Friendship Christian clinched a spot in next week's Spring Fling state tournament with a 10-0 six-inning rout of Marion County in a game that was played on Lookout Valley's home field.

The Commanders did most of their damage with a five-run second inning a four-run fourth. Caleb Snider then doubled home Hunter Watts in the sixth to provide the final run to invoke the mercy rule.

Brennan Swindoll tossed a complete-game three-hitter, striking out nine along the way. The Chattanooga State signee added a two-run double in the big second-inning.

Marion County proved to be its own worst enemy by committing five errors. The Warriors, who won the District 6-A championship before finishing runner-up to Silverdale in the Region 3-A tournament, finishes the season with a 20-14 record.
