Memorial held to honor fallen officers

Posted: Updated:

Thursday was the Chattanooga area law enforcement memorial.

Hundreds of civilians and law enforcement officers gathered to honor those lost in the line of duty.

Mayor Andy Berke was on hand to deliver remarks and his gratitude to the officer's families.

On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty every two days in the U.S.

"I wish people would take more time to walk up and shake the officers hands nowadays and say thank you, thank you for your service," says widow Debbie Syler.

Since the first known line of duty death in 1791, more than 19,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today's memorial was part of police week.
