Baylor, Sale Creek students excel in international science fair

HOUSTON, TEXAS (WRCB)-  Darby Schumacher of Baylor School and Jared Taylor of Sale Creek High  successfully represented the State of Tennessee at the 2013 International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, and Environment) Project Olympiad known as ISWEEEP, which was held in Houston.  

More than 2500 projects were registered to compete at ISWEEEP and only 450 projects were selected as Finalists and invited to Houston. The finalists came from 68 different countries and 46 U.S. states to showcase their science projects to the public and compete for nearly $150,000 in prizes and scholarships. 

Schumacher, a junior at Baylor, was a gold medal winner and earned a $600 prize for her water project, "A Filter Today Keeps Pollutants Away: a study of nanofiber based stormwater filtration."  She was also was awarded a $2000 scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin.

Taylor, a sophomore at Sale Creek, was a silver medal winner and earned a $300 prize for his environmental project, "Wood Shavings for Hydrocarbonous Remediation on Water."

    For the third straight year, Hamilton County School Board members have given their Superintendent an "above average" report card. According to scores released by Board Chairman Mike Evatt, Smith ranks highly for his choice of attire, his personal ethics, and communicating with his staff and the public.
