What are the options when it comes to preventing breast cancer?

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - One of the biggest health stories that still has people talking today is news that Angelina Jolie revealed she had a double mastectomy because of a high risk of breast cancer.

And now a lot of women who are at risk are wondering whether this is the right option for them.

This morning Janet Kramer Mai, The Breast Health Navigator with Erlanger Medical Center was our guest. She said the BRAC1 gene that Angelina carries is only found in about five percent of women.

Janet said that women with a family history of breast cancer may want to have the genetic test to see if they carry the gene. Janet went on to say if it is a situation like Angelina Jolie's where there is an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer, a procedure like the double mastectomy may be the best option at your chance for a longer and healthier life.

When it comes to concerns about physical appearance and feeling less than whole as a woman, Janet says plastic surgeons now do a wonderful job giving women back their sense of confidence when it comes to their breasts.
