Top-ranked Marist overwhelms Heritage in state semifinals
RINGGOLD, Ga. (WRCB) -- Marist hardly broke a sweat while out-scoring opponents 28-0 in its first three games of the Class AAAA state playoffs, and its fourth proved no different.
The top-ranked War Eagles overwhelmed second-ranked Heritage with four first-half goals and cruised to a 7-0 win in the state semifinals. Marist advances to face Columbus in Friday's state final.
Heritage ends a banner season with a 20-1-1 overall mark.
Kelsey Carrier opened the scoring ten minutes into the match with a header off a throw-in from Grace Packer, then assisted on the War Eagles' second goal from Clara Gastaldi moments later.
Packer added a third goal in the first 25 minutes when her throw-in from the left side slipped through the hands of keeper Shelby Mullinax and found the back of the net. The War Eagles went up 4-0 just before intermission and never looked back.
The Lady Generals, who earned a spot in the final four by beating Cairo on penalty kicks in the state quarterfinals, struggled throughout to gain and maintain possession against a near-perfect Marist attack.
East Ridge blanks Boyd-Buchanan to earn sectional spot
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- East Ridge scored twice in the first half and thwarted a variety of Boyd-Buchanan scoring chances in the second to survive and advance with a 2-0 win over the Bucs in the Region 3-A/AA semifinals Tuesday night.
The Pioneers clinch a spot in Thursday's region championship match, as well as Saturday's sub-state sectional round. They will travel to East Hamilton for the region title tilt, with the winner getting to host on Saturday.
East Hamilton beat Sweetwater 4-0 in the other semifinal Tuesday night.
Kolbe King put the Pioneers up 1-0 midway through the first half on a great individual effort in front of the net. The junior forward controlled a beautiful long-distance pass from Rasim Kazic with a gentle touch from his left foot, then crossed over Boyd-Buchanan keeper Austin Walker to hammer home a right-footed goal from ten yards out.
With less than ten minutes to play before intermission, Alex Martinez gave East Ridge a two-goal advantage with another close strike. Martinez's first tried to head home Marco Briseno's free kick, then received a second chance when the ball was kicked back around to him in front of the net.
