Gordon Lee sweeps into Class A Public state final
CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. (WRCB) -- Gordon Lee's offense proved to be an unstoppable force in its first four state playoff games, and visiting Treutlen County proved anything but an immovable object in Monday's state semifinals.
The Trojans continued their string of blowouts with wins of 17-8 and 16-0 to sweep a doubleheader from the Vikings and clinch a spot in the state finals. Charlton County, who swept a doubleheader from Trion (6-0, 15-0) in the other semifinal, will host Gordon Lee for a doubleheader this Saturday to open the best-of-three championship series.
The Trojans (29-2) piled up 31 hits between the two games, including 19 in a come-from-behind win in the opener. After giving up five early runs, Gordon Lee rallied to take a 7-5 lead in the fourth and then scored seven runs in the fifth to put the game away.
Branton Phillips delivered a three-run triple in a six-run first inning to help the Trojans put the nightcap away in a hurry.
Tanner Sexton collected five hits, including a solo home run, and drove in five on the day. Adam Vandiver added four hits and scored five runs, while Daniel Brooks and Cody Wilson had three hits apiece and combined to six RBI.
East Hamilton baseball tops Meigs to earn sectional spot
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Matty Henshaw pitched a complete game and Matt Milita collected three hits to lead East Hamilton to a 4-2 win over Meigs County in the Region 3-AA semifinals Monday night at Chattanooga State.
The Hurricanes (25-12) clinch a spot in the sub-state sectional round for just the second time in program history, but will first travel to Sequoyah for Wednesday's region championship game. The Chiefs advanced by eliminating Red Bank 8-5 in the other semifinal.
Henshaw started slow, allowing five hits across the first eleven batters he faced, but settled down to retire ten straight and keep the Tigers off the scoreboard until the seventh. He struck out eleven and did not walk a batter.
Austin Gatewood helped provide the run support with a sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI-double in the fifth. Kyle Cox also delivered a sac fly in the third, and Landon Pauls scored the Canes' final run on a passed ball in the sixth.
Christian Thompson finally got Meigs County on the board when he scored on a passed ball in the seventh, but Dustin Kennedy's sac fly produced the only other Tigers' run.
Thompson leads Ooltewah past Coffee County in 3-AAA semis
OOLTEWAH, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Zach Thompson tossed a complete-game two-hitter to help Ooltewah clinch a spot in the Class AAA sectionals with a 3-1 win over visiting Coffee County in Monday night's Region 3-AAA semifinals.
The Owls (23-11) advance to host Cookeville in Wednesday's region final. The Cavaliers eliminated Soddy-Daisy 7-3 in the other semifinal.
Thompson gave up the Raiders' lone run and both hits in the first inning before locking down the rest of the way to help Ooltewah avenge last year's disappointing home loss to Warren County in the semifinal round.
The right-hander, who is signed with Coastal Carolina, retired 13 in a row at one point and finished with eight strikeouts opposite three walks.
Hayden Bradley went 3-for-3 and delivered the go-ahead RBI-single as the Owls scored all of their runs in the fourth inning. Brody Binder and Micah Duncan also delivered run-scoring hits in the inning.
Defending state softball champ Grace Academy upset by Whitwell
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Grace Academy ousted Whitwell in the region semifinals on its way to the Class A state softball championship a year ago.
The Lady Tigers refused to let it happen again.
Whitwell scored two runs in the top of the seventh to snap a scoreless tie then thwarted Grace final at-bat rally to secure a 2-1 upset of the defending state champ in the Region 3-A semifinals Monday night.
The Lady Tigers clinch a spot in Friday's sectional round, but will first play at Sale Creek on Wednesday for the region title. Sale Creek ousted Arts & Sciences with a 3-2 win in the other semifinal.
Grace's Tory Helton and Whitwell's Riley Long went toe-to-toe in the circle through six scoreless innings, then Helton was the first to flinch.
Kacee Hendrick led off the seventh with a single for the Lady Tigers' first hit of the game, then pinch-runner Becca Muir advanced to third when Carly Woods reached on a throwing error. Muir scored the game's first run on a passed ball, then Magen Fulfer plated Woods to make it 2-0 on a groudout a few batters later.
But Grace wouldn't go quietly in its last at-bat, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with Helton's RBI-triple to right. Savannah Jeno tried to score Helton with a chopper to short, but UTC signee Alyssa Coppinger fielded and fired home to cut down the tying run at the plate.
Woods then made a diving stop and made the force out on Jeno at second to end the game and the Golden Eagles' season.
