Former gymnastics coach accused of sexting student

Posted: Updated:

WHITFIELD COUNTY, GA. (WRCB) -- A former gymnastics instructor faces charges for sending sexual text messages to a 15-year-old girl.

The Whitfield County Sheriff's Office arrested 38-year-old William "Billy" Newcom for felony computer electronic pornography and child exploitation.

Sheriff Scott Chitwood says he met the girl about two years ago at the Creative Arts Guild, when cheerleaders from a local middle school began training with him.

About a month ago, the girl's mother says she found messages from Newcom on her daughter's phone.

Sheriff Chitwood says in one of the messages Newcom allegedly tried to get the girl to meet him for sex.

Newcom is being held in the Whitfield County Jail.

The sheriff says it is unknown if there are additional victims, and says the investigation will continue.
