Society of Professional Journalists honors to Channel 3

KNOXVILLE (WRCB) - The Channel 3 Eyewitness News team was honored in the East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists' Golden Press Card Awards Friday evening in Knoxville.

Channel 3 received top honors of the night for General Reporting, Breaking News Reporting, Sports Reporting, and Public Affairs Progrraming.

The General Reporting Award of Excellence and the Award of Excellence for Breaking News Reporting honored the staff's body of work following the March 2, 2012 storms. The station finished ahead of WBIR-TV, Knoxville in the General Reporting category. The Award of Excellence for Public Affairs Programming honored WRCB-TV Channel 3 for its program, "Bully Battle: A Town Hall Meeting." 

Reporter Keith Cawley was honored in first place with the Award of Excellence for Sports Reporting on "Keeping the Faith," about a local coach's leadership style. Second place went to WATE-TV, Knoxville and third place went to WTVC-TV, Chattanooga for "Dave's Diamond Darlings."

The East Tennessee chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists covers Knoxville, Chattanooga, Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol, and other cities around the eastern third of the state.

The station's newspaper partner, Chattanooga Times Free Press, was honored with several awards in the print and online categories. To see an entire list of winners, click here.
