Chattanooga FC soccer season kicks off Saturday night

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - The fifth season of soccer in Chattanooga kicks off Saturday night at Finley Stadium as Chattanooga Football Club faces Rocket City United from Huntsville, Alabama. Chattanooga's team consists of current and former college players as well as professional players. It plays in the National Premier Soccer League which has teams in 19 states.

Chattanooga played in the NPSL National Championship in 2012 and lost the final 1-0 to FC Sonic in San Diego to finish second out of 47 teams. That finish marked the best in club history. CFC finished 8-3-3. The club claimed its second Southeast Conference title in three years on its way to the national title game.

CFC also qualified for the 2013 US Open Cup by winning the NPSL Southeast. Amateur, semi-pro and pro teams alike compete in the US Open Cup, including the professional leagues the USL, the NASL and even the MLS.

Since the Chattanooga Football Club burst on the scene in 2009, it has led the NPSL in attendance. In doing so they've also helped Finley Stadium get out the red.

Stadium Director Merrill Eckstein said Finley at least broke even again in 2012.

"It's a nice addition to have the CFC. I would rate them, other than the Mocs who put a bigger crowd in the stands, the best drawing activity in the stadium," said Eckstein.

In 2012, CFC launched the CFC Academy which is a youth soccer development program for elite players of all ages. In its first year, more than 400 youth players tried out for CFC Academy.

The team is coached by Bill Elliott and his coaching staff of Brian Rooke and Jimmy Weekley, who also coaches at The Baylor School.

Saturday's match begins at 7:30 p.m. at Finley Stadium. Tickets are $5 and parking is free.
