The search continues for a new City Manager for East Ridge

Posted: Updated:

EAST RIDGE, TN (WRCB) - Last week, it came down to three candidates.  Two dropped out and In a special called meeting on Saturday, former Red Bank City Manager Chris Dorsey, was offered the job, on the spot.  He declined.  By the middle of this week, Dorsey had withdrawn his name, all together.  In Thursday night's regular City Council meeting, members voted unanimously to post the employment ad and begin the process again.

The East Ridge City Charter stipulates the City Manager must have a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration.  That specificity limits the field of candidates.  Councilman Marc Gravitt admitted they went through more than 80 applications for the job in the last search, some coming from people with advanced degrees from prestigious universities, but since they lacked the Public Admin. BA, they were excluded.

After the meeting, Mayor Brent Lambert told Channel 3, the council's reputation can also make the job a hard sale. "Since December," he said, "we've seen a highly competent City Attorney go, we've seen our City Manager forced to resign and so, it's a difficult environment here.  And I think, again, any qualified candidate would be wise to think about their options."

Public Safety Chief Eddie Phillips, appointed Deputy City Manager by a duly qualified City Manager years ago, is currently serving in the post.  It is a duty he has assumed some 5 times over the years to his recollection.

A Charter Study Committee is being formed.  Should they suggest changing the qualifications for City Manager to something a little less specific, city leaders have been told the earliest they could hold a referendum on the edits would be May 2014.
