GREENSBORO, N.C. (UTC/WRCB) – Shelby Morrill and AJ Hamilton hit home runs to help Georgia Southern beat Chattanooga 6-2 Wednesday in the opening round of the Southern Conference Socon Softball Championships.
SoCon Pitcher of the Year Sarah Purvis kept the Lady Mocs in check, scattering eight hits and striking out three in a complete game effort.
Morrill hit a two-run shot to right to put the third-seeded Eagles up 2-0 in the first, then Hamilton extended the advantage to 4-0 with a two-run homer of her own in the second.
For the first time all day, the designated home team, Georgia Southern (29-27), allowed no runs in the top of the first. Then in the bottom half, after a two-out double by Kourtny Thomas, Shelby Morrill sent a ball deep over the right-field fence to put the Eagles up 2-0 in the first inning.
Lexi Allen later added a two-run double in the fourth for a six-run lead before the Lady Mocs (26-27) could find their groove.
Kaiti Dutton scored on an error in the fifth and Anyssa Robles added a sacrifice fly to account for Chattanooga's only two runs.
UTC now drops into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament. The Lady Mocs will face the College of Charleston in an elimination game at 9 a.m. ET Thursday morning.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported Wednesday that senior infielder Sara Poteat returned to the UTC program, but sat out the SoCon opener while serving a two-game suspension.
Poteat and fellow senior Kasey Tydingco left the team last week following a controversial forfeit at UAB that resulted in a two-game suspension for head coach Frank Reed.
