NW Whitfield baseball, Central softball earn playoff wins

Posted: Updated:

TUNNEL HILL, Ga. (WRCB) -- Northwest Whitfield erupted for seven runs in the first inning and never looked back in an 11-1 rout of visiting Grady Tuesday night in the third and deciding game of their opening round Class AAAA state playoff series.

The Bruins (23-6) now advance to host Stephens County in a best-of-three second-round series. The two teams will play a doubleheader Thursday and a third game, if necessary, on Friday.

Liam Henry baffled Northwest with his submarine delivery in last Friday's series-opener, but had little of that same magic Tuesday. The Bruins pounded him for seven hits in the opening frame, including a two-run double by Andy Whisenant and run-scoring singles by Seth Pierce and Kyle Brock.

Henry also hit two batters with the bases loaded to plate the game's first two runs.

Diego Peralta added a two-run homer in the fourth and A.J. Orozco closed the scoring with a two-run single in the top of the seventh.

Wade Terrell tossed five shutout innings of one-hit ball to pick up the win on the mound striking out five along the way.

Central (softball) 5, East Ridge 2
The weekend rains wreaked havoc on the District 6-AA softball bracket, but Central weathered the storm without a problem.

The Lady Pounders erased an early deficit to post a 5-2 win over East Ridge and advance to Wednesday's winner's bracket final opposite East Hamilton. The Lady Canes blasted Red Bank 12-2.

Central took advantage of a throwing error to tie the game at 1-all in the third, then took the lead for good when Hannah Powell hit a rocket to short with the bases loaded in the fifth. The line drive skipped off the glove of East Ridge's Alexis Moore and into left field to plate two runs.

Chasidy Ainslie gave up just two runs en route to the victory in the circle.

Moore hit a home run on the game's first pitch to give the Lady Pioneers an early 1-0 lead, but later left the game with a serious knee injury. Tot Najueelah drove in East Ridge's other run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
