TENNESSEE (WRCB) -

Tennessee was ranked the best state to retire in by Bankrate.com.

The website ranked states on a number of criteria including hospital beds per 1,000 population, doctors per 100,000 population, crimes per 100,000 population, state and local tax burden, average temperature, and cost of living.

Tennessee's crime rate was 4,204 per 100,000, higher than the national average of 3,253.

However, Tennessee's cost of living ranked second out of 51 and the tax burden was lower than the national average. Access to health care was comparable with the national average.

The top five states to retire in were Tennessee, Louisiana, South Dakota, Kentucky, and Mississippi.

The bottom five states to retire in were Wisconsin, California, Washington, Alaska, and Oregon.
Alabama ranked eight and Georgia ranked 18.
