Recent cruise ship disasters trigger a dip in bookings...and prices

Posted: Updated:

(NBC) -- Given all the bad publicity surrounding several ill-fated cruises earlier this year it's no surprise bookings on cruise lines are said to be down.

Luckily for you, so is the price.

Travel experts are seeing plenty of bargains to get you on board.

"These are savings in some cases, depending on the length of your cruise, that could be $1,000,  $1,200 per couple...huge incentive there," notes TravelZoo.com's Gabe Saglie.

Carnival just announced bonus commissions for travel agents who can entice customers to set sail.

"The average cruiser isn't going away," Saglie says.  "They're looking for these bargains. They understand that mishaps, although we saw several in a row, are very far and few between."

Jeanenne Tornatore at Orbitz.com notes bookings and prices always fall off this time of year.

"After Spring Break it's the typical start of the slower season for the cruise industry," she points out.

The European cruise market, on the other hand, appears to be benefiting from the slowdown here in the states.

MSC Cruises saw its sales nearly double in April compared to the same month last year.

(WRCB) - Good Saturday. While we have seen a few light sprinkles this morning, the bulk of the rain stayed east and south of the area, and I think that will continue to be the case. For the rest of the day we can expect mostly cloudy skies with a high today of 74. We will see our winds increasing behind the front to 10-20 mph from the northeast.Tonight, the winds die down, and we will see some clearing heading through the overnight.More
