UPDATE: Lupton City shooting suspect in police custody

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - A suspect is in police custody, following a deadly shooting in Lupton City Sunday night.

Chattanooga police spokesperson Nathan Hartwig says the suspect, whose name has not been released, is being treated for a gunshot wound he received during an altercation Sunday night.

Chattanooga police responded around 11:15 p.m. Sunday to a home on Northrop Street.

When they arrived they found the victim, 20-year-old Wendell Washington, on his front porch with a gunshot wound to the chest.  He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators do not believe this was a random shooting and the Washington was targeted.

Hartwig says the suspect is under 24-hour watch by police and hospital security.

He says charges of criminal homicide and possession of a weapon during the commission of a dangerous felony have been filed for his arrest.
