UPDATE: Bicyclist killed in car crash identified

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Chattanooga's 3 State 3 Mountain Challenge turned tragic after a cyclist died during the event.

The Chattanooga Police Department told us the victim is Antonio Jose Desousa Ribeiro, 49, from Jacksonville, Florida. An investigation revealed Ribeiro was heading down a hill and around a curve, when another vehicle was coming the opposite way. Ribeiro somehow drifted into the oncoming lane.

Authorities had parts of Ochs Highway blocked for hours, and they wouldn't allow our cameras to the scene.

"The sport is not without risk, and unfortunately we had a fatality," said ride participant Joe Baird of Kentucky.

The 3S3M cyclists we talked to said they heard about the incident, but didn't know details. They also said the rainy weather makes for dangerous cycling conditions.

"Visibility is down, the roads are slick, cars can't see as well, and riders get cold and don't make as good of judgment," said Baird.

"Some of the times you think that maybe I shouldn't participate right now, maybe we should just throw in the towel, because it was really unsafe," said Raymond Jennings of Dallas

The Chattanooga Bicycle Club puts on the 3S3M Challenge, and those officials have yet to return our requests for comment.

"It's just unfortunate of course. You wonder if everything had been done to prevent that, and I feel like today was a very well executed event, very well coordinated," Baird said.

Again, there is no word if the bad weather contributed to the fatal crash. The 3S3M Challenge web site says they hold the ride rain or shine. That event has been held in Chattanooga for the past 26 years.

Chattanooga Bike Club ride director Dawn Salyer tells our partner the Times Free Press several other, non-related crashes were reported.
