FORT OGLETHORPE, Ga. (WRCB) -- Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe head coach Jonathan Schneider challenged his team to make history this year in the GHSA girls state soccer playoffs.
Friday night, his Lady Warriors took the first big step towards it.
Carol Costa and Maryanne Morgan scored second half goals and LFO beat visiting East Jackson 2-0 in the opening round of the Class AAA state tournament.
The Lady Warriors, who secured back-to-back region championships for the first time in program history with a perfect 16-0 region record, advance to host Blessed Trinity in Tuesday's second round. It is just the second time in program history LFO has advanced past the first round.
After a scoreless first half, it took only five minutes of the second for the Lady Warriors to move in front.
Costa controlled a loose ball and fired a shot from about 15 yards out. It struck the left post and kicked towards the net, trickling past the line for the game's first goal.
The game remained 1-0 into the final ten minutes when Morgan finally added some breathing room. She capped an impressive run up the right side by crossing over a defender and firing home a goal from ten yards out with just under eight minutes left on the clock.
