Dalton, NW and SE Whitfield advance in GHSA boys soccer playoffs

DALTON, Ga. (WRCB) -- Top-ranked Dalton opened the GHSA Class AAAA state soccer playoffs in impressive fashion with an easy 10-0 rout of visiting Stone Mountain Wednesday night.

Ramiro Huitanda tallied a hat trick to help the Catamounts remain unbeaten at 18-0 overall this season.

Dalton scored five goals in the first and five more in the second and invoked the mercy rule with 18 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Catamounts advance to host Johnson (Gainesville) in next week's second round. Johnson beat Columbus 2-1 in Wednesday's opening round.

Northwest Whitfield 2, Grady 1 (penalty kicks)
After playing to a 1-1 tie through an overtime period, Northwest Whitfield out-shot visiting Grady 4-1 in penalty kicks to secure a 2-1 win and advance through the opening round of the GHSA Class AAAA boys state soccer playoffs.

The fifth-ranked Bruins, who made their first-ever state quarterfinal appearance last season, will travel to face second-ranked Chestatee in next week's second round. Chestatee blasted LaGrance 6-0 in their opener Wednesday night.

The teams remained scoreless until five minutes into the second half when Giovanni Aguero headed in a corner kick from Cielo Nunez to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Eighth-ranked Grady answered quickly, though, evening the match on Carlos Valdivieso's goal a few minutes later.

Nunez, Christian Perez and Miguel Villa scored in penalty kicks before Jonathan Marquez sealed the win with the Bruins' fourth and final make.

Southeast Whitfield 4, Chamblee 1
-- Southeast Whitfield joined rivals Dalton and Northwest Whitfield in the second round of the Class AAAA boys state soccer playoffs after a 4-1 road win at Chamblee Wednesday night.

The third-seeded Raiders will travel to top-seeded Carrollton next week. Carrollton routed Stephens County 7-0 in its opener.
