Silverdale baseball, CSAS softball wrap up district titles

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- With a share of the district title on the line, Silverdale Academy wasted no time and left no doubt.

Spencer Mossburg hit a grand slam to spark a seven-run second-inning as the Seahawks cruised to a 15-0 mercy-rule victory over rival Grace Academy to clinch a share of the District 5-A regular season championship.

Silverdale finishes the regular season with a 20-2 mark (7-1 in 5-A play) and will be the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming district tournament. The Seahawks finished tied atop the district with Boyd-Buchanan after splitting a doubleheader with the Bucs, but earned the top seed via the run differential tiebreaker.

The Seahawks scored two runs in the first, then drew four straight walks to open the second for a 3-0 lead. Mossburg stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and sent a high fly over the fence in right-center to push the advantage to seven.

Matt Millard later added a two-run single in the inning and the Seahawks put it on cruise control the rest of the way en route to the district title.

Arts & Sciences (softball) 6, Grace Academy 0
Liana Rodrigues was her own worst enemy in pursuit of a perfect game Tuesday afternoon, but she proved a bigger problem for Grace Academy.

The talented University of Tennessee at Chattanooga signee was perfect through fives innings, but settled for a no-hitter as Arts & Sciences clinched the District 5-A regular season championship with a 6-0 win over the Golden Eagles.

Rodrigues struck out 13 and received plenty of support as the Lady Patriots improved to 7-0 in district play. She retired the first 15 batters in order before issuing three walks in the sixth inning, but escaped the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a perfect throw from catcher Kiara Suttles to pick off a runner at second.

Suttles opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first, giving the Lady Patriots 28 home runs in 23 games. Jamani Greer went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, while Briana Taylor capped the scoring with an RBI-double in the fifth.

CSAS will wrap up the regular season Thursday against Boyd-Buchanan before entering the upcoming District 5-A Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
