UPDATE: Local food bank wins prize to help hungry children

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- After a push via social media, the Chattanooga Area Food Bank has won a $45,000 grant, which the agency announced Tuesday on their Facebook page.

The grant will be used to feed hungry children in the Tennessee Valley, and continue the group's mission of serving twenty counties in Tennessee and Georgia.

The Chattanooga Area Food Bank battled against 200 other food banks across the country in a social media-driven campaign.

Winning the $45,000 prize means that 22,500 sack packs will be given to at-risk, local elementary school kids, so they don't have to go hungry throughout the day.

You can also help local partnering agencies of the food bank win a $20,000 grant.

Visit the Chattanooga Area Food Bank's Facebook page for more information.

The Chattanooga Area Food Bank also partners with Channel 3 for our annual Share Your Christmas Food Drive , which also helps those in need in the Tennessee Valley.

The 2012 campaign brought in 269,201 pounds of food, donated by generous families, schools and agencies in the area.
