Health department worker sentenced to probation for computer thefts

Posted: Updated:

HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- A Hamilton County health department worker pleaded guilty to theft and was sentenced to probation.

Rickie Flerl pleaded guilty to stealing computers from the health department.

Police say evidence linked Flerl to the thefts and he was arrested in February.

In February of 2013, the Hamilton County Health Department reported 15 missing computers, totaling more than $10,000 tax payer dollars, plus a projector.

Flerl was sentenced to probation with community service and ordered to make restitution.

The Hamilton County Health Department said in February the stolen computers had no medical records on them. They say they were brand new a year ago and were noticed missing shortly after they arrived.

"The only mistake in my opinion, was that it should've been reported to the sheriff's department," Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger said earlier this year.

Our news partners at the Times Free Press said that Llerl's job title at the time was listed as a skilled craft specialist. In 2011, he was listed as making $36,340, according to records.

A statement released in February of 2013 by Janice Atkinson, public information officer for Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, said "The investigation identified Hamilton County Health employee, Rickie Flerl as a suspect and evidence was established linking him to the theft of departmental assets."
