Police: remember road rules when driving in the rain

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- The wet weekend kept emergency workers in the Tennessee Valley busy with accidents.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News spoke with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. That department alone had more than 20 active crash scenes going on at that very minute.

You can't always blame car accidents on the weather. Often times it's the driver's fault. But by following a few simple road rules, you can avoid becoming another crash statistic.

You might take every precaution when you're driving on wet roads, but you often see drivers who don't.

"They tend to speed up and switch lanes without blinkers, and pretty much go Mad Max on it. They forget the whole rules of the road," said Red Bank driver Mitch Miller.

"Keep that safe distance between the vehicles and have time to react, because we do have a lot of rear end stuff that goes on. The other vehicle is not paying attention and rear ending another vehicle," said Officer Tammie Delashmitt of the Red Bank Police Department

Police say you shouldn't under estimate the importance of your headlights. Even when it seems light enough, a simple flick of the switch could keep you safe from a wreck.

There's always those who claim to hate driving in the rain, but do it anyway.

"I always try to keep an extra eye out for those that are scared of harsh weather conditions," said Red Bank driver Josh Elkins.

"Anytime you're not comfortable with the rain, the weather, always pull over. It's better to be safe than sorry," said Delashmitt.

Sometimes even the best of drivers can be caught off guard by a pool of water in the roadway. If you hydroplane, a slower rate of speed can prevent a crash.

"Usually the vehicle won't veer out of control as long as they slow down, and that's the main thing that we ask is that they slow down," Delashmitt said.
