Suspected lightning strike causes apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Three apartments were damaged in a fire Sunday after a suspected lightning strike.

Firefighters responded to the 3400 block of Jenkins Road to the Bell Standifer Apartments. Smoke and fire was visible when crew arrived.

Crews were able to get the fire contained within 15 minutes. Officials say the fire could have been much worse if not for the residents' quick action.

Three apartment units were damaged. The Red Cross opened a shelter at the Brainerd Recreation Center for those displaced.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials believe lightning started it.

Tri-Community Volunteer Fire, Highway 58 VFD and Catoosa County Fire Department assisted on the fire.
