Gordon Lee rocked, NW Whitfield rallies for win in title games

Posted: Updated:

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. (WRCB) -- Gordon Lee's red-hot run hit a brick wall Friday night in the Region 6-A championship game.

Two nights after beating powerhouse Darlington to clinch the sub-region title, the Trojans were overwhelmed by visiting Mt. Paran in a 10-2 defeat that snapped a 18-game winning streak.

The Eagles clinched a playoff spot via winning the outright region crown, but will play in the private school bracket of the state playoffs. Gordon Lee will make the Class A Public School field based on its impressive 22-2 record (15-2 in Region 6-A), but its seed will likely take a hit since it did not win its region title.

Mt. Paran wasted no time jumping in front with six runs in the first two innings, highlighted by a two-out, two-strike grand slam off the bat of designated hitter Keith Johnson in the first frame.

The Trojans answered with a two-run single from Jake Rogers, but the runs proved to be their only tallies of the game. Tyler Flowers hit a two-run homer for Mt. Paran (23-2) in a three-run sixth inning to put the game away.

Gordon Lee mustered just four hits and struck out seven times against Mt. Paran's Andrew Maxwell and Jordan Versteeg.

The Trojans will open the state tournament with a doubleheader at home next Friday, but will wait for the final power rankings to be released Tuesday to learn their seed and opponent.

Northwest Whitfield 7, Cass 6
Northwest Whitfield mounted a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to erase a three-run deficit and stun visiting Cass 7-6 to clinch the Region 7-AAAA championship and a top seed in next week's Class AAAA state tournament.

The two teams split a doubleheader Thursday night, setting up a winner-take all third game Friday night.

A Dylan Williams solo home run in the fifth gave the Colonels a 6-3 lead, but they couldn't hold it. The Bruins fought back with two hits and took advantage of a Cass error to score four runs in the sixth.

Branden Smith and Diego Peralta both drive in two runs. Seth Pierce and Kyle Brock each delivered RBI-singles in the second inning to put the Bruins on the board.
