Hamilton Co. Sheriff's Office joins national child safety program

Posted: Updated:

HAMILTON COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) -- The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office is joining a national program to ensure missing children and elderly people get home safely.

The "A Child is Missing Alert Program" is used by local law enforcement agencies, as well as U.S. Marshals and the FBI.

When a person is reported missing, calls go out to numbers registered in the program's database.

"One of the biggest things people have to realize, that it can happen to you," program founder, Sherry Friedlander tells Channel 3. "Never think, "it can't happen to me," because at any moment a child can go missing, an elderly can go missing."

Hamilton County deputies underwent training on the program Friday.

Since it began 16 years ago, "A Child is Missing Alert Program" has saved more than 1300 lives.
