Emergency called meeting for Niota commissioners

Posted: Updated:

NIOTA, MCMINN CO., TN (WRCB) - Another emergency meeting will take place Wednesday night in Niota as tensions continue to mount in this small McMinn County city.

The board met Monday after the Sanitation Commissioner notified other commissioners that she had reportedly found a potential broker for liability insurance that Niota lost from the Tennessee Municipal League Pool last Friday.

However, the broker did not make it to the meeting and commissioners disagreed about exactly why he did not attend, so Niota continued to be without any insurance.

The commissioners have scheduled an emergency called meeting for 6 p.m. Wednesday to discuss contracting out services such as garbage pickup since the city is still without liability insurance.

Community members say they just want city officials to work together.

Along with the garbage pickup being canceled, the Niota city parks are closed, the police department is entirely shut down, and the fire department's resources are limited to the county truck, which can hold only so much water in case of a fire.

The McMinn County Sheriff's Department will patrol Niota until the police department can run again.
