Pounders on verge of title after walk-off win over Canes

Posted: Updated:

HARRISON, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Dominique Dawson delivered a two-out, two-strike walk-off single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to lift Central to an 8-7 win over East Hamilton Monday night in a battle of District 6-AA unbeatens.

The Purple Pounders (24-6, 13-0) claim sole possession of first place and can clinch the outright regular season championship and top overall tournament seed by beating the Hurricanes again Tuesday night at Chattanooga State.

Dawson did just about everything for the Pounders.

The senior finished with four hits, adding a two-run single in the second to his walk-off game-winner. He also started on the mound and pitched into the sixth inning before leaving with a 5-4 lead.

The two teams went back-and-forth all evening long, with the Hurricanes (20-11, 12-1) scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to set up Central's final at-bat dramatics.

Gabe Fomby and Ryan Poole each drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth to turn a one-run deficit into a 5-4 lead. The advantage ballooned to 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth on Bo Evans' two-run homer.

South Pittsburg 4, Whitwell 1
South Pittsburg scored three runs off errors and rode the arm of Logan Alder to a 4-1 win over rival Whitwell to clinch the outright District 6-A regular season championship for a third straight year.

Alder struck out nine and gave up just one run on five hits in a complete game effort. Bailey Kilgore's RBI single in the third was the only blemish against him.

The Pirates managed just three hits as a team, but took advantage of five errors by the Tigers.

South Pittsburg (23-5, 11-0) scored one run in the third on a Whitwell error, then used a three-run fourth inning to pull ahead. Tucker Abbott drew a bases-loaded walk in the inning to plate the Pirates' only run that didn't come off an error.

Other high school scores from Monday, April 22:

Bradley Central 8, Rhea County 1
Chattanooga Christian 7, Notre Dame 6
Christian Heritage 13, Trion 7

Meigs County 8, Sequatchie County 1
Sale Creek 9, Tyner 1
Walker Valley 3, Rhea County 0
