Athens toddler found alone; mom charged

MCMINN COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) -- An Athens woman has been arrested on child neglect charges, after her child was allegedly found covered in motor oil.

McMinn County deputies were called to County Road 383 for a woman needing transport to the Hope Center.

According to the police report, deputies say Melissa Tawse appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when they arrived.

The report says a two-year-old child was found alone in the yard, covered in motor oil and drinking out of a dirty milk carton.

When Tawse refused to cooperate with officers, she was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct.

After searching the trailer, officers found no power or running water to the residence.

The child has been placed in the Department of Child Services.
