St. Jude Stories of Hope: Researchers

Posted: Updated:

(WRCB) - Dr. Laura Ramsey is a St Jude researcher working to personalize chemotherapy for patients bone cancer the most common type of childhood cancer.

3,000 new cases are reported each year.

Many of those patients depend on St Jude for life-saving treatment.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Department aims at giving each patient enough chemotherapy to kill their leukemia, but not too much to cause harsh side effects.

But it's not just treatment St Jude doctors are researching.

The hospital's genome project aims at understanding cancer better, by testing the DNA of every patient.

Just this week St Jude researchers identified childhood brain tumor mutations and found evidence the tumors are susceptible to drugs already in development.

It's another step toward a cure.

And while other labs are cutting back on research, the breakthroughs continue at St Jude thanks to donor dollars.

Research fully funded by donations, and leading the way in finding a cure.
