Military aircraft offer rides for a good cause

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB)  --  Military aircraft took to the skies Saturday to raise money for a local children's hospital.

Most will never see the Scenic City from a Huey Army helicopter.

"We flew over my old high school, Hixson High School," says Tani Shaner.

For $79 aviation enthusiasts and thrill seekers could buy a ride on the Huey Saturday, $500 bought a seat on a combat Cobra helicopter. However, pilots like David Harris got a little something extra.

"Being a pilot was even more incredible because he let me take the controls and fly the Cobra itself," Harris says.

Its all a part of this year's fundraiser with Hixson's Flight Museum.

"We're bringing to this community something they have never seen before," Peter O'Hare says.

O'Hare is the president of the board of directors at the museum.

"Our mission here at the museum is to increase the public's awareness of aviation through the flight of historic aircraft while supporting the local children's hospital," O'Hare says.

Each ticket purchased supports the Flight Museum as well as Erlanger's Children's Hospital.

Since the museum opened in 2010, organizers say they've raised $16,000 for the children's hospital and their future goals are sky high.
