Whitfield Co. Detectives: Man stabbed to death over a woman

Posted: Updated:

ROCKY FACE, GA (WRCB) - Whitfield County deputies were called to a Rocky Face home just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

That's where they found Ricky Grice, Jr. slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle. He'd been stabbed several times.

22-year-old Jonathan Durden remains in the Whitfield County Jail charged with the murder of 28-year-old Ricky Grice, Jr. Detectives say it appears to have been over a woman.

"It shocks me that he would do something like that. He ain't that type of person," Brandy Williams said.

While those who know Jonathan Durden try to figure out what happened, Whitfield County Sheriff's detectives are doing the same thing. They're studying every detail of his driveway, where they say he stabbed Grice to death.

"Unfortunately, this is a very tragic ending for whatever the disturbance had developed into," Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood said.

"I heard they had been arguing all day. The boy and his girlfriend had been," neighbor Quinn Joseph said.

Neighbors say the woman moved into the Quinn Road home in Rocky Face a few years ago with her boyfriend, Jonathan Durden. Investigators say she told him she wanted to leave overnight and called Grice to come pick her up. She says when Grice pulled up in the driveway, Durden got mad, walked up to his truck and started stabbing him through the open driver's side window.

Neighbors say they came out after hearing the commotion, and saw the woman jump in the truck with the victim and try to drive off, but they say she didn't make it far. She hit a dirt pile and got stuck.

When emergency crews arrived, it was too late. Grice was pronounced dead when they got to the hospital.

"There was numerous stab wounds above his chest area," Sheriff Chitwood said.

The sheriff's office immediately arrested Durden and charged him with murder.

"The suspect was still in the immediate area right there. And they did say he did have a knife in his hands and there was, I think, blood upon his body," Sheriff Chitwood said.

"It's kind of dumb in a way, isn't it? If people would stop and think before they did anything, there would be a lot less violence," Joseph said.

Investigators say there's still a lot of unanswered questions. They're not clear on if the woman was dating both men, or if the victim was just a friend giving her a ride.

Durden is being held in the Whitfield County Jail without bond.
