CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- April is sexual assault awareness month and the leaders of Hamilton County are getting the word out so women will know they're not alone and help is out there.

"A lot of times people don't realize sex assault happens in our community," says Devitt.
"It does. It's very much a part of the community. Help eliminate sexual assault."

Some victims will go to local organizations, but many never get help.

On the courthouse steps, Mayor Jim Coppinger kicked off the awareness campaign.

The mayor says this is acrime that affects generations; daughters, wives, relatives, mothers, grandmothers and in some cases, men. In Hamilton County, 499 cases have been reported in the last 12 months.

One out of every six women has been or will be raped.
