Scene of van wreck a "problem spot"

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- It was a chaotic scene at the intersection of Standifer Gap and Hickory Valley Roads.

Police say a work van ran a red light and hit a transport van for Serenity Adult Day Care.

Emergency workers scrambled to the scene, carting off a dozen elderly people.

Charles Harrison pastors a church at this intersection and says he is no stranger to hearing the blaring sirens.

Once the work van hit Serenity's van, it instantly flipped on its side.

The fire department used specialized tools to get everyone out.

Bruce Garner with the Chattanooga Fire Department says ,"They had to peel off the top off the front of the van in order to get some of the passengers out."

One by one the elderly passengers are treated and taken to a nearby hospital.

Harrison says the intersection has been a problem spot and it doesn't seem to get any better.

"I've only been here for two years and there have been several wrecks at that corner," says Harrison.

Several emergency crews work to get help to the injured while police continue to investigate why the van ran the red light.

Crews worked for hours to get the intersection back to normal.

Harrison says it was scary to watch.

"It is very scary. I just asked God to watch over the people there and the emergency workers."

The owner of Serenity says 11 of the 12 passengers are out of the hospital.

Police didn't say if any charges are pending.
