Smoke alarm alerts elderly couple to fire

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- An elderly couple is displaced after an early morning fire on Winchester Street.

Chattanooga Firefighters responded to 205 1/2 Winchester Street around 1 a.m. Saturday.

An elderly couple lives in the home. The wife told firefighters the smoke alarm woke her up. When she ran to the rear bedroom to tell her husband, she saw an electrical outlet on fire.

Both were able to escape unharmed.

A Chattanooga officer who arrived on the scene was able to rescue the family dog from inside the home.

Firefighters controlled the fire quickly and contained it to the back of the home.
The cause of the fire is likely electrical and accidental, according to Chattanooga fire officials.
