Lady Mocs Supporters: "We're so lucky we had Wes Moore for 15 years"

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - News of Wes Moore's departure has come as a big disappointment for some Lady Mocs fans.

"I had figured that this would be the job that he would leave us for," said Dean Heavener.

Dean and Mary Jane Heavener got a call from UTC officials Friday afternoon as Coach Moore was delivering the news to his team.

North Carolina State has hired Chattanooga's Wes Moore as its new women's basketball coach.

"He has really put out a lot of good women that have done a lot of things for the community," said Dean, tearing up.

"You can't find anyone that doesn't say something positive about Coach Wes," added Mary Jane.

The couple offers financial support through player scholarships.

They also travel with the team, no matter the distance.

They say the players and Coach Moore are like family. That's why it's so hard to see him go.

"This is hard on him as well as it being hard on us," said Dean.

They worry about the team maintaining its winning record.

"He had this marvelous group of recruits that I hope will still come," said Jane.

They also hope new leadership will be accepting of their role with the team.

"Hopefully we'll be able to build the same kind of relationship," said Mary Jane, "I know we'll always have the joy in the ladies."

Despite the difficulty in saying goodbye, they wish their coach nothing but the best.

"We're just so lucky that we had him for 15 years," said Dean.
