Nesting penguins at the TN Aquarium get rocks for their efforts

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- It's nesting season for the penguins at the Tennessee Aquarium.

Most people's reference to nesting birds at the ones found in trees, built from twigs and grass.

Penguins use rocks and stones, along with other available materials to construct their nests.

Two species at the Aquarium, the macaronis and the gentoos, sprung into action when presented with the stones.

Senior aviculturist Amy Graves said that the first egg last year appeared in a macaroni nest about three weeks after the penguins were given their rocks.

The Aquarium successfully reared five penguin chicks in 2012.
