Local educator plays major role in '42' the movie

Posted: Updated:

GRUNDY COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- Jamie Ruehling is famous around the halls of Grundy County High School for roles as assistant principal, baseball coach and athletic director, and now the world will know him for his role in the movie "42," a bio pic about the first Black major league baseball player, Jackie Robinson.

"Getting to see how a movie is made first-hand, I will never look at a movie the same way again."

Ruehling plays the role of Spider Jorgensen, Brooklyn Dodgers third baseman and close friend to Robinson who is played by Chad Boseman.

Director, Brian Helgeland, told Ruehling Spider's role was significant.

"You were the only connection we have to Jackie Robinson from the minors to the majors so we want to bring that out. I thought that was pretty cool."

With his first time on the big screen came the first time jitters of reading a movie script.

"That was nerve wrecking. I was so nervous. I had to keep my hands in my pocket to keep him from seeing me."

Ruehling says he got the call for the part of Jorgensen on his way back from Atlanta.

Getting the part was hard but keeping it a secret was even harder.

Hunter Brown, a student and baseball player at Grundy County High School says, "I think it is very cool and we knew him before all of that. If he blows up he has to come back and give us autographs."

Ruehling made his childhood dream come true and offers advice to anyone looking to do the same.

"For anyone ever wanting to try something like this, never give up. Always just go for it."

"42" the movie opens in theaters nationwide April 12.
