(MSNBC) -- Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, has been asked by the White House to serve as an Ambassador, most likely to Japan, NBC News confirmed Monday.

NBC Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell reports that the a country assignment won't be final for a few more weeks.

An ardent supporter of President Obama's candidacy in 2008 and his 2012 re-election bid, Kennedy spoke at both Democratic National Conventions.

Her January 2008 endorsement of candidate Barack Obama alongside her uncle, the late Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, was viewed as a pivotal moment in Obama's heated Democratic primary against fellow Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
