CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- The Racoon Mountain Visitor Center will be closed through the summer for improvements.

Officials say major equipment improvements and maintenance at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Plant will require the closure of the popular visitor center through the summer.

TVA is developing a new "TVA history walking trail" at the Laurel Point Recreation Area near the upper reservoir to provide for visitors.

The Raccoon Mountain Visitor Center will reopen fall of 2013.

Raccoon Mountain's trail system and the Nickajack Reservoir public access point at the base of Raccoon Mountain will stay open.

The Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) will be working with the TVA to keep Raccoon Mountain's award-winning trail system open this summer; there may be some limited access near the visitor center. The Nickajack Reservoir public access point at the base of Raccoon Mountain also remains open.
