CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Automotive website Edmunds.com reports that Volkswagen will cease production of the Routan later this year.

The minvan platform has not been strong for the German automaker, being bested by the Chrysler, Toyota and Honda versions. Volkswagen is said to have sold only 10,400 Routans in 2012.

The Routan, interestingly enough, is made by Chrysler for Volkswagen. The contract for the joint venture expires towards the end of 2013, and was created when Daimler-Benz owned Chrysler.

The replacement for the Routan is expected to be based on the CrossBlue concept vehicle that made its debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

The Chattanooga Volkswagen facility is under consideration for the production of the Routan's replacement, as is Volkswagen's Mexico facility.

Volkswagen is expected to make a decision in the next few months.
