Salvation Army celebrates 36th annual Sunrise Service

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- The Salvation Army held its 36th Annual sunrise Easter service Sunday.

It was planned for its usual spot at Chattanooga's National Cemetery but rain forced them to move indoors.

The crowd is usually around 350-- it was down to about 100, but they say it was still a very special sunrise service. They say it's important to keep the celebration alive and have an old saying they go by.

"'Jesus Christ rose from the dead and sometimes it's difficult for us to get out of bed,' and so it's important, I think, to show our faith and trust in god to be there on Easter when the sun rises," says Major Algerome Newsome.

Sticking to Salvation Army tradition, they had bagpipers and the internationally recognized Jericho Brass Band play.
